January Fearless Female Finalists

Artsy’s January Fearless Female finalists come from a variety of backgrounds and across the nation. Read more about each empowering woman below.

Santa Fabio pushes the envelope of her creativity with every image she creates for her clients and personal projects. Her belief is that beautifully composed and lit photographs are magnificent, and they do more than record a passage of time, of emotion or of place. They must tell a story. As a former journalist and now corporate photographer, she brings life to the people and places she captures and then delivers a quality product to those who have trusted her vision. Before the digital age, she was standing toe to toe with her male colleagues shooting sports. At the beginning of her career, she was chosen to be an intern at the Detroit News where she was the second woman to ever be hired. For the past 4 decades, her passion of photography and paying jobs has helped her fund her two large bodies of work. Documenting the restoration of Detroit's Theater District, and a village in Sicily where her parents are from.

Patricia Fortlage is best known for her photography empowering women and children. From her core belief that if you invest in women and girls, entire communities will be raised. Patricia has focused much of her freelance photography career working with organizations doing just that. From her powerful piece covering the conditions in Southern Malawi (read about the female-led Othakarhaka Foundation on her website at www.patriciafortlage.com) to the stereotype-breaking, female-empowering Wonder, Girl Project (on Instagram @thewondergirlproject), Patricia is promoting female empowerment one project at a time.
Krista is a neonatal intensive care nurse and photographer in Charlotte, North Carolina. She specializes in photographing newborns, babies, children, families, and premature infants and enjoys serving preemies and their families in the NICU. Krista has always had a passion for art and creativity and is constantly looking for ways to grow and learn as a photographer and nurse. She also donates her time to the March of Dimes Chef's auction, Santa sessions at a local hospital, her hospital's annual butterfly release event for babies who have passed away, and also her free NICU portraits for families in hospitals.
